This sculpture was carved from oak and is a representation of the ancient Egyptian god Thoth. Thoth was depicted as two animal forms: an ibis and baboon and in zoomorphic form as having a human body with the head of an ibis. He is known as the scribe god of learning and is associated with the phases of the moon; he was also guardian of the dead and would transport gods to the netherworld on his wing.
